Most adolescents and teens can’t imagine a world without **Facebook, Twitter and other social media sites.** As a parent, you may feel a responsibility to monitor your child’s social media use, and that makes sense.

However, it’s important to make a distinction between [necessary monitoring](http://www.uknowkids.com), which you’re doing for your child’s safety, and simply impinging on their social life and interactions with their friends. Facebook for kids is a form of interaction – one that most children want limited to their peers as much as possible.

**Here are 10 things that parents do on social media that might be embarrasing to their children: **

In this article from The Washington Post, Cecilia Kang investigates underage children, Instagram, and if the [image-sharing giant](https://resources.uknowkids.com/blog/bid/256138/Is-your-child-ready-for-Instagram-You-might-want-to-read-this-first) is doing enough to make sure kids are safe from adult strangers. We agree that the safety of children online should be the number one priority from all of these social networks, but unfortunately that is not always the case. Here is an excerpt of the piece below:

[Pheed](https://www.pheed.com/) is the latest in social media and is positioned to replace Facebook and Instagram in the near future. Why? Because it offers so much more sharing options than Facebook, Youtube and Instagram combined and some of its features will make your** online parenting** harder.

**What is Pheed?
**

Pheed is a [social media app](https://resources.uknowkids.com/blog/bid/317953/11-Sites-and-Apps-Kids-Are-Heading-to-After-Facebook) that is available only on iPhones and online. Soon, it will also be available on Android phones, as well. If your child accesses Pheed using only their phone, any online parenting software that you use to track your child's social media usage will be useless. This could be a major draw for kids who have their own phones.

Each user gets what is called a "channel" which is much like Facebook's wall. Users can post their information for everyone to see, or they can close their channel. If a user closes their channel so that only certain people can see it, they have the option of charging other users to view the channel. This can be a highly attractive feature for younger users who may let the wrong users see their channels all in the name of making a profit.

It was only a matter of time: [cyberbullying](https://resources.uknowkids.com/blog/bid/173713/10-Signs-Your-Child-is-a-Cyberbullying-Victim) has come to Instagram.

In only one of the most recent incidents, a police report was filed against several girls in a northern California school district for cyberbullying on [Instagram.](https://resources.uknowkids.com/blog/bid/256138/Is-your-child-ready-for-Instagram-You-might-want-to-read-this-first)  According to school officials several girls allegedly hacked into their victim’s Instagram account, then posted demeaning and “sexually derogatory information” on the twelve-year old’s account.  The victim’s mother believes the girls took this action to get back at her daughter after she complained about being bullied at school.  It took filing a police report to get the offensive material removed.

[Instagram](https://resources.uknowkids.com/blog/bid/256138/Is-your-child-ready-for-Instagram-You-might-want-to-read-this-first) is one of the newest forms of social media that is being utilized by millions all over the world. Using pictures to communicate thoughts, feelings and ideas, this appeals to the younger masses especially and many tweens and teens are flocking to this form of communication to express themselves. Uploading their pictures directly from the applications on their phones or tablets using frames and decorations makes it easy and fun to use to connect with friends and followers.

But Instagram isn't rated PG and there is no actual filter or censorship of what can be shared. There is a ton of content on there that many parents would deem pornographic or simply inappropriate, which is why Instagram monitoring is key. If you're concerned with what your kids are watching, what they're exposed to on the internet and the company that they keep, you should be just as concerned with what they are involved in on their social media applications, including Instagram.

Having your kids “constantly connected” is not a new thing. When I was a teenager we had the same addiction to music as modern teens have with social media. My parents used to refer this unconscious state as “plugged in”, which described me as; headphones in and music up so loud that I couldn’t hear the outside world. At the time I loved music so much that I would listen to it all the time, as loud as could, frequently blaring it from my second floor speaker system so loud the entire neighborhood could hear it. I’m fairly certain my thought process at that time was as follows: This music is really good (which it wasn't), but this music is really really good turned up all the way, and because if Ilike it so much, everyone else should hear it too, right? Instagram is an application that can be downloaded to several different smartphones and cellular devices. This application is a[ photo sharing one](https://resources.uknowkids.com/blog/bid/314727/Instagram-or-Snapseed-What-s-your-child-s-favorite-photo-sharing-app) in which users can take pictures, add special effects, and then share them on several different social media sites with just the click of a button. The photo is then placed out there into the network of friends the users have, both those that have the application themselves and those who do not, resulting in a sharing of moments and memories quickly. The program, however, does not come without dangers. As with any social media sharing entity, the quick expression and release of information is both exciting and dangerous. It is for that reason that parents need to understand the risks and be instagram monitoring vigilantes, especially when it comes to their children that use the application.

One of the reasons that[ Instagram monitoring ](https://resources.uknowkids.com/blog/bid/256138/Is-your-child-ready-for-Instagram-You-might-want-to-read-this-first)needs to be taken seriously is because, as with any social media site,

The world of parenting has evolved at a rapid pace in the recent past. Though the internet has been around for a few decades now, the [access and content of this virtual world](https://resources.uknowkids.com/blog/bid/324349/6-Internet-safety-rules-for-parents-of-teens-and-tweens) has changed drastically. Though we may not want to police our children to the point that they feel they are being virtually "jailed" we are right to set guidelines in this world as we would in the physical world. We don't hesitate to set boundaries about how far our children may roam on their own, and this same rule should apply to the internet.

Here are a few basic tenants to follow in digital parenting:

- Children should allow parents assess to all of their internet passwords, which can include email. This is necessary in school, for parents must assess their children's homework through email and class websites. In addition to this, children should not have the freedom to own accounts that their parents cannot view. At some point in their adolescence a parent could revisit this idea, but it is certainly prudent to[ follow this guideline ](https://resources.uknowkids.com/blog/bid/159129/10-Things-to-Teach-Your-Kids-About-Internet-Safety)while a child is in their formative years.

This guest post is from Tina Kehoe, a stay-at-home mom of three wonderful kids and a frequent writer on digital parenting topics.

A little girl named Marie, who happens to be in eighth grade, recently received an anonymous text that reads “we are going to have sex next Friday after the dance. Or else." The little girl trembles in shock and fear as she ponders whether she should go to an authority figure or just live in fearful suspense, wondering if the sender is telling the truth. Another sixth grader in New York is plagued by the school bully, so he retaliates via text that “You and your sisters and mom better watch your backs. My dad has a gun."

Many parents who took precautions to make sure that their [children under 13 didn’t have a Facebook accoun](https://resources.uknowkids.com/blog/bid/163926/Facebook-targets-kids-under-the-age-of-13-Facebook-for-kids)t failed to realize that Instagram was also a social networking site.  At first, Instagram just seemed like a photo-sharing app and some parents were even excited that their kids were taking an interest in photography.  Soon, they realized that, just like Facebook, Instagram gives you the ability to post comments on photos.  And that was where the downward spiral began, with kids posting nasty comments about each other and feeling left out when others posted photos of themselves doing things together.

But this wasn’t all.  Like Facebook, [Instagram](https://resources.uknowkids.com/blog/bid/250613/Social-Network-Monitoring-The-Rise-Of-Instagram-and-Snapchat) is full of unsavory individuals trying to contact others without knowing them.  There have been instances reported of kids being contacted by pedophiles trying to get their hands on photos of young girls.  They mask themselves as some type of legitimate business like a radio station running a contest, knowing that this is sure to lure young people.

Shared via Yahoo! News: The latest controversy over who can use your Instagram photos is far from an isolated event.

Not only does your child have an incredibly active social life, but now a huge part of their social life happens online, away from the prying eyes of parents.  It's probably unknown to you how many hours your child spends hiding under her covers after the lights are supposed to be out, texting away, or browsing through her friends' status updates.  And now, as if Facebook and Twitter didn't give you enough to worry about, there is [Instagram and Snapchat](https://resources.uknowkids.com/blog/bid/317953/11-Sites-and-Apps-Kids-Are-Heading-to-After-Facebook); yet one more reason why social network monitoring needs to be a priority for every parent.

Parents are often ignorant about some of the dangers that stem from social media. Although many children and teenagers view social media as a fun place to connect with friends, it can be very dangerous depending on what they are doing online. Here are some Parental Intelligence issues that you should think about as your child uses social media websites.

[Social media accounts ](https://resources.uknowkids.com/blog/bid/255401/How-To-Keep-Kids-Safe-With-Social-Media-From-A-Detective-s-Viewpoint)are not private, even if you select private settings for the accounts. When kids have academic problems, report cards make that clear to parents. And if a kid skins a knee or breaks a bone, parents know what to do.

But detecting that a child is being bullied, and then knowing how to react, may not be so clear-cut.

Kids often are reluctant to tell their parents they're being[ bullied or cyberbullied](https://resources.uknowkids.com/blog/bid/333521/Cyberbullying-versus-traditional-bullying), making it difficult to know that they're having trouble with other kids at school or online.

Did you miss Bullying Prevention Awareness Month? If you are a busy parent, it may have been easy to miss all the work that was being done to raise awareness about bullying. After all, you want to spend your extra time connecting with your kids, which doesn't always leave room for everything else.

But the need for anti bullying awareness goes beyond a single month, especially when it comes to[ cyberbullying,](https://resources.uknowkids.com/cyberbullying) which can take place at home and throughout the year, even when children are supposed to be taking a break from school.

Parents – myself included – are apt to shrug off cyberbullying as just another iteration of the bullying you or I might have endured as kids. We turned out all right in spite of it, didn't we? But the truth is that cyberbullying is very different from anything we knew.

If they have Internet access, all they have to do is Google something for more information. Furthermore, YouTube is becoming more popular each day for its entertaining content and for the fact that it often has step-by-step, how-to videos on virtually anything.

Young kids also know not only how to make cell phone calls and send text messages, they can download and use most smart phone applications.
